Jewish Country Houses

Upcoming publication

Nino has been invited to contribute a chapter on Strawberry Hill House. Frances, Countess Waldegrave (1821-1879) was the daughter of John Braham, a celebrated Jewish opera singer and theatre owner. Lady Waldegrave inherited Strawberry Hill  in 1846, restored Walpole’s original building in 1856 and transformed it in her own image in 1862. The chapter explores Lady Waldegrave’s Jewish heritage, and her role in shaping the collection and interiors at Strawberry Hill in the 19th century.
